Satin is a weave: a way of interlacing threads so that one side is smooth and glossy and the other is matte. Satin can be woven from silk, but today most satin robes are woven from polyester or similar fibres. And not every robe is satin: a few of our picks below are chiffon, lace or mesh.

Feel: both are smooth and cool against the skin; pure silk is a touch softer and more breathable.
Care: polyester satin is far more forgiving, and most pieces can go in a gentle cold wash. Silk usually wants hand washing or dry cleaning.

How to wash satin (and keep it glossy)

Always start with the care label, and if the symbols look like hieroglyphics, the Government of Canada’s guide to apparel and textile care symbols decodes every one. For most polyester satin robes, this routine keeps them looking new:

Go cool and gentle. Hand wash in cold water, or machine wash on a cold, delicate cycle inside a mesh laundry bag.
Use a mild detergent. Skip bleach and fabric softener, which can dull the sheen.
Don’t wring. Press out water with a towel instead of twisting, which can pucker the weave and stress the lace.
Hang or lay flat to dry. Use a padded hanger, away from direct sun and radiators. Never tumble dry satin with lace or embroidery.
Smooth, don’t scorch. Steam it, or iron inside out on the lowest setting with a cloth in between.
Silk is different. If a robe is pure silk, hand wash only with a silk-safe detergent, or dry clean.
